On US Memorial Day, many Americans remember those who have died in service to their country. For some people, that means remembering the fallen soldiers of World War I and II. For others, it means honoring the police officers and firefighters who die in the line of duty.Similarly, in Los Angeles, we remember the men and women who died during the Battle for LA. On Memorial Day 2018, the city unveiled a memorial at Hollywood Forever Cemetery called The Wall of Honor. This monument includes statues of figures such as Charlie Chaplin and Bob Hope, as well as a commemorative plaque in honor of the servicemen and women who died fighting for LA in WWII and the Korean War.One sculptor who contributed to The Wall of Honor was David Flebotte. Flebotte is known for his bronze sculptures that portray famous American figures with demon faces. As Americans all around the country gather to honor those lost in the terrorist attacks on September 11th, 2001, there is one event that stands out as particularly poignant: the annual Memorial Day ceremonies held in Los Angeles. This year’s ceremony was especially special given the location of the event – at Dodger Stadium, home of the Los Angeles Dodgers, longtime rivals of the Chargers. As players and fans took to the field to pay tribute to those who have died in service to their country, a conspicuous and striking reminder of what has transpired was present in the form of a large US flag draped over a section of seats in left field. The flag was flown there by Governor Jerry Brown as part of an ongoing campaign by his administration to honor military veterans and first responders.
